He is has a perspective on this country and the world that most of us do not have. If that happens, usually thats because the passion and love is so strong that you can iron out all the kinks and move on to pure love. But there are those times when love comes back to your door knocking and you shouldn't have answered. Why do you answer? Why not? People... MOST people change, evolve... GROW!!! That's if they are under the age of 35 years old. Trying to get a drastic change out of a man who is over 35 years old and set in his ways is like trying to draw blood from a rock! BUT... sometimes, sometimes a man can change over crazy circumstances. They usually don't have anything to do with the woman, but nonetheless a change occurs. It may not be specific to what you were looking for, but it helps. You can almost over look the other annoying habits and habitual mistakes and blunders. The change is usually significant enough to get their foot back in the door for a talk or dinner. If it's been years since you have communicated with one another... this change can get them a few dinners and conversations. The real test comes three months into this revisited/newfound love when you realized the asshole has not changed a bit and he is just as blind to his major issues as he was when you were together the first time.

So, why did I do the sequel? I always try to look for the good in people. Keep my distance from the bitter bug that lingers over every woman's head. I believe in love and love believes in me... really though, love?? How you gonna do me like that, love?? I thought we was cool??

It's sooo frustrating because all the things that bring you close to a person just aren't enough at the end of the day. The good is soooooo good and then the bad makes me wanna go out and kill him!! The good in him doesn't out weigh the bad... which doesn't make HIM bad... it makes him bad for me!! But then I look at my "perfect dude" list and I wonder if he really exists. How many of those things can I wait for? How many of those things do I really need?? Will I ever find someone with all those qualities or am I being naive and romantic? Did I just walk away from what was meant to be for the second time??

I want to believe that MY dude is out there waiting for me to walk into his life... I have to believe...

My beloved Democrats & Moderates

This is a plea for all of you apart of that 20% who will vote for John McCain if their Democratic Candidate does not win the DNC nomination...

WHAT ARE YOU THINKING?!?! Yet your eyes meet with the tenderness of lovers and there are no words necessary but a small smile from time to time... to be near one another in silence and comfort is all that is needed. To share passions and space is amazing. I enjoy being near him. His silly texts make me smile. His wisdom comforts me. I love making him laugh. One single embrace gives me more than a thousand beds would have given me. to say I enjoy his company and conversation is an understatement... perhaps I love him... perhaps I loved him from that first moment when our eyes met on that busy street on that warm late night so many years ago. Looking at him through a child's eyes, loving him with a woman's heart. Every moment we share it seems like we have only gone moments without seeing one another... not weeks. We don't need the Republicans to destroy the party, we are doing it to ourselves. I am sick and tired of the Clinton campaign and everyone associated with it comparing Barack and this campaign to some kind of novelity. His record in the Senate was not a cheap parlor trick!! With every statement they insult those of us who vote for him based on his policies and his record and those senators who voted along side him on the Hill!! I'd like to thank Keith Olberman for bringing all of this to light!!! It isn't an endorsement, and I'm glad it isn't. MLK day, my thoughts:

Today we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. . Today we celebrate freedom. Real freedom. There are no propaganda ads with American flags waving in the dusty wind, with little black kids and white kids hugging one another and people wearing colored pins. You cannot package this kind of freedom with corny slogans or push people into believing in it with fear... we are living a dream of freedom. Tonight as I sit in an apartment complex occupied by older white people, Armenians, a homosexual couple and a couple of brown people sprinkled in... I am living that freedom. Working for women who make more than their male counterparts, we are living that dream. What would Harriet Tubman say if she were watching the South Carolina debates tonight?? What would Dr. King's official statement be in regards to Bob Johnson's statement bashing Barack Obama? What would he say about Barack?? What would he say to Barack??

Dr. King marched on Washington DC forty years ago where hundreds of white American settlers fought for their freedom a hundred years before... it took nearly 100 years to shake down the capital and stand this country on it's ears. It has only taken us forty years to do it again. I am blessed to be apart of this right now. To have the freedoms I have and continue to keep those freedoms that were handed down to me. The freedom I have now is not my own, it belongs to The Freedom Riders, The Little Rock Nine, The Black Panthers, Frederick Douglass, The Conductors of the Underground Railroad, The Abolitionist. My freedom is running for President... I own that! I own being able to choose a woman or a black man for MY PRESIDENT!! I own keeping my right to work just as hard and make just as much as my male counterparts! I own keeping my right to be proud of who I am and share my culture with others! I own keeping Dr. King's dream alive within me and sharing it with everyone I can.

That speech... I Have A Dream... its a beautifully written speech. It was spoken with passion, love, frustration and hope. Dr. King had hope. He had no proof that it would ever be different, but he hoped it would be. He hoped with his heart and his soul, and then he acted on that hope and the people followed. That speech would have only been a bunch of words on a page without his action. I love my freedoms! I am thankfully that someone thought that much of my future without knowing me to make it possible for me to choose where I could go to school, and not have my race dictate that for me. I don't know what I'm feeling, why I feel the way I do... but the excitement is overwhelming. Something is happening in this country. Something is happening in our community. We are no longer stagnant and I'm grateful. Black, white, brown... we are moving in a cohesive unit and the love is overwhelming.

Today we thank Dr. King for leading us into freedom with hopes and dreams and a plan to make them a reality. Today we should thank one another for maintaining the reality. One Love!

xo
Brooke

Open Letter to Bob Johnson

Dear Mr. Johnson,

I am appalled and embarrassed by your unnecessary verbal assault on Barack Obama and his campaign. And in the middle of all of those people, I was blessed with a Nannie!!! Roberta Charity Boleman Paul was Nannie. She was not our great grandmother, but she was great grandmother's sister who had a hand in raising her, her children and their children... I wish that my children would have known her!! Being loved by her was like being next to a crackling fire in the middle of a Chicago snow storm. She got into your soul and warmed you up!! Though she never had children of her own, Nannie was a mother through and through... she was giving, non-judgemental, even tempered, nurturing, full of love for all. There will never be another like her in my life... She is who I aspire to be as a woman, a mother, a worker, a christian, a human...

I'm watching this movie and laughing and crying all over again... praying that every person has or will have the chance to be blessed with a Nannie! That person who changed your life! That person you cannot imagine what your life would have been like without them in it... that person who saved you so many times... most of the time when you didn't know it. That undying inspiration to love and live with every bone in your body...

God bless you Nannie!!! I miss you so much!!! I hold on to your hugs and the sound of your voice, it keeps me warm on many cold days!!! I was blessed to have been loved by you and to have been taught by you! I thank God for sharing you with me!!!
Bye Bye Darlin', love you!! I love you too much! Too much!!!

Kwanzaa! Kwanzaa! Kwanzaa!!

We are in our third day of Kwanzaa celebrations. This was something that Kirby; my little brother; decided all on his own that he wanted to try and celebrate this year and so we as a cluster of family and friends come together and celebrate.

It's been really fun, I have to say!! I enjoy this little quasi-holiday!!! I feel this connection and togetherness when we all gather together around the Quinora (sp?) and give thanks to our ancestors and share thoughts on the night's theme. It doesn't seem so contrived and organized... and it's a nice little pick me up after the mad rush we have created for Christmas. Unfortunately we have turned that holiday into one of fear and dread. There is no Christmas spirit anymore!! We have placed a bar code on the holiday and it's up for sale. Kwanzaa... not so much!! No stress on where to purchase the hottest toy of the season or what size show your nephew wears now. This holiday is simply about togetherness and reflection on our past. LOVE IT!!!! If you haven't experienced Kwanzaa yet, you should give it a whirl!! It's very rewarding!! A nice end to the holiday season!!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://brooklynbites.blogspot.com/2007/12/kwanzaa-kwanzaa-kwanzaa.html' title='Kwanzaa! Wow! Barack Obama has a good solid chance at the Democratic Nomination for the Presidency. Wowsers! I was listening to the "I Have A Dream" speech on the plane the other day. The day that Dr. King dreamed about is here. Our time is now!! The time to bulldoze this country over with equality is now, today and tomorrow. What makes us too good to pick up the fight our mothers and fathers and grandparents walked the streets for in the 1950's and 1960's? Why are we not suppose to shout and be heard through fire hoses and dogs barking? There is a black man running for the democratic nomination for the American Presidency... and he has a damn good chance of recieving it. Yet, his major opponents are not the southern conservative racist white democrats, or the New England traditionalist or the bible belt christians. Obama's major opponent are the black people of this nation!! Our enemy's face, shape or color has never changed. It's always been black!! Somehow we have allowed ourselves to become self destructive, killing our community from the inside out. "Nigga's Ain't Shit" "F*ck That Nigga"... we don't trust or believe in one another, so we are at a stand still. When are we going to figure out that "The Man" isn't keeping us down, we are keeping us down!! Everything that our ancestors endured from masters and keepers, we are doing on a daily in our inner cities. Staying true to the streets of your hood doesn't mean that you should encourage and condone the violence that goes on. Babies and young brothas and sistas dying every 6 minutes in some innercity somewhere in this country. We don't have to worry about some white guy doing it... we've beaten him to the punch. Now is our time to grab our young generation of future leaders and hold them close. Encourage them, tell them you love them, show them who they are suppose to be, bring them into society. This is our time... this is the time for every black and brown person to stand up and take control of their destiny. Seize the opportunity. It wasn't too long ago that black people weren't allowed to vote in this country;in fact our voting Amendment is coming up again to Congress next term; and now there is a black man running to be President of the United States. And is in good standing to receive the democratic nomination. This is our time my brothers and sisters. This is our march on Washington! This is our Watts Riots!! This is our Little Rock 9!! No it shouldn't be that big of a deal to have a man of color sitting at the helm... it should just be the natural order of things... but it isn't!! That isn't the world we have created for ourselves. Maybe this is our yellow brick road into TRUE equality!! We have the tools in order to be seen and heard... let our voices ring over the mountain tops and through all the valleys... voices shouting freedom. This is freedom!! Not Operation Iraqi freedom or yellow ribbons tied on trees. This, standing up for the right to be counted in this country... that is freedom. That is the freedom Dr. King shouted about! That is the freedom our grandparents fought waterhoses for. This is our time to get that freedom!!! I pray you are not thinking this is an endorsement for Obama. Though I am a Obama supporter, I am not saying, "vote for the brotha, he's black". What I am is surprised and saddened by the lack of excitement by our community for Obama. White people are more excited about him than we are. We were not put on this earth to simply exist. There is so much more expected out of us, otherwise we wouldn't have been given these brains to create governments and do all the other things we have evolved into creating. And I think that we have been given an opportunity to show unity within our community. Not just in votes but supporting black contributions to mankind PERIOD!!! Let's begin to really celebrate one another and show a gratitude for life and not having to live in this world ALL alone without another one of our kind.

Be the change!

Peace, Love and Blessings!
BK

Brutha's Sista

So...the boys are gone! They are now flying across the state heading toward Atlanta to begin on a new journey in their musical careers. I am overjoyed with pride and happiness, and yet I feel like a part of my body has been ripped from my body. I feel like a lone wolf lost from her pack!!! I have spent my whole life separating myself from "The Boys" so as not to just fade into the background like an accessory. I rarely sing or dance, because THEY ALL DO. I created an eclectic style of dress and lifestyle so that the anatomy wasn't the only thing separating us as people. And yet, here I am feeling sort of empty inside with only one brother left in the city. Do not mistake me, it isn't a feeling of being left behind or resentment... We are on different paths completely... I just feel slightly alone now... I feel weird with so many of them gone at one time... I just feel weird...

Poli Sci 101

I am a woman. I am a black woman. I am a democratic black woman. I am a liberal democratic black woman. I am registered liberal democratic black woman ready to cast my vote. And the question is with whom? The black man? Or the woman? Do I vote for the rookie who is ready to take a chance and go with his gut? Or do I go with the veteran who has a steadier hand balancing her plate with an ease, but not willing to take that leap so soon...?

Hilary is the safe choice. We can easily argue that she is the democratic nominee because it isn't just Hilary we get, its a package deal that worked for us before. We know what Team Clinton is capable of! In a time of division, hunger and pain something familiar is always healing. After everything that we as a people have gone through in the past 7 years, what do we really need?? A sure secure safety net or do we try something completely new.

I cannot help but really be in love with Michelle and Barack Obama... almost just as much as I love Hilary and Bill. Barack is an excellent politician and humanitarian. He sticks to his guns on policy which he has proven in the Senate during the short amount of time he has spent in office. True, he's a newbie to The Hill... but that doesn't mean he is at all incapable of being Commander in Chief.

I know people who are completely dedicated to a single candidate already... I'm talking full blown t shirts, campaigning, phone banking, etc. since the announcements. Unfortunately as bad as this sounds, I'm not married to a candidate yet. I am still in the courting pool excited with the amount of good choices and that we have two very capable leading candidates!! Am I a bad democrat?? Am I a bad American?? All I want to do is turn the republican conservative right wing party on their ass, take over and rebuild and revamp our country!! And to be quite honest I really don't care whether it's Clinton or Obama!!! BUT... Barack did say something that other day on Jay Leno that kinda stuck with me because I had to agree with him, I'm tired of being against something all the time. I've spent the last seven years being against everything, that it would be nice to be to be passion about an issue that has nothing to do with changing someone's fuck up!!! Right?!? ugh!
